At around 7:27 p.m. on Saturday, a back-to-school community basketball game in Haffen Park in New York City was disrupted by gunfire, according to the New York City Police Department (NYPD).
Several people opened fire during the game, killing a 32-year-old man who suffered a gunshot wound to the chest. A 17-year-old girl sustained a shot to the face and was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Three other individuals with less severe injuries transported themselves to local medical centers for treatment.
The NYPD responded swiftly, taking four people into custody and recovering multiple firearms at the scene. A full investigation is underway, and charges are pending.
This incident, which unfolded during what was meant to be a festive back-to-school event, underscores the challenges of ensuring safety in public gatherings. As the community grapples with shock and grief, organizers and residents are urging renewed efforts to protect neighborhood events and support those affected.
