China Rally Past Mexico 3-1 in Chiang Mai Opener

The Chinese team delivered a stunning comeback to beat Mexico 3-1 in their Pool F opener at the FIVB Women's Volleyball World Championship in Chiang Mai, Thailand. After dropping the first set 22-25, coach Zhao Yong's squad turned up the heat and captured momentum.

Stepping onto the court for the first time under coach Zhao Yong, China faced a familiar opponent. Their only previous World Championship meeting dates back to 2006 in Japan, when China swept Mexico 3-0. This time around, Mexico arrived with fresh tactics and confidence.

Outside hitter Li Yingying made her return from injury in the starting lineup. While she showed flashes of her usual skill, China struggled to sync initial attacks and defense. Mexico took full advantage, capitalizing on a powerful spike from Sofia Maldonado to seal the opening set 25-22.

Fresh adjustments in set two proved decisive. Zhao sent in Wu Mengjie and Zhuang Yushan, and the duo sparked a fierce rally. Neither side led by more than two points until Mexico held set point at 24-23. Wu responded with an equalizer and then landed the go-ahead kill. A textbook double block turned back Maldonado, and China clinched the set 26-24.

The third set showcased China’s defensive prowess. They raced to a 12-4 lead behind relentless net blocks and forced errors, eventually rolling to a 25-10 victory. The side outblocked Mexico 12-3, shutting down every major threat.

In the fourth frame, Zhuang Yushan dominated once more, finishing with a match-high 23 points. Mexico fought valiantly but could not stem the tide. When Samantha Bricio’s final spike sailed out of bounds, China wrapped up the set 25-18 and walked away with the 3-1 win.

China will next face Colombia on Monday, aiming to build on their momentum. Mexico will look to bounce back against the Dominican Republic. With two matches down and a tough schedule ahead, both teams will be eager to make their mark in Pool F.
