Hong Kong rolled out the red carpet for history this week as the HKSAR government held a commemorative medal presentation ceremony to mark the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. Celebratory medals, awarded by the country, were given to surviving veteran soldiers, resistance commanders and their descendants in Hong Kong, shining a spotlight on the spirit of resistance and patriotic resolve.
“The people of Hong Kong united with our compatriots in the motherland with unwavering determination and fearlessness of sacrifice, and actively devoted themselves to the frontline of the war of resistance to defend our homeland,” said HKSAR Chief Executive John Lee. His remarks underscored the city’s pivotal role alongside the Chinese mainland in one of the most critical chapters of modern history.
Lee saluted the bravery of Hong Kong citizens who joined the East River Column and the Hong Kong-Kowloon Brigade. Through daring guerrilla missions, rescue operations and unwavering solidarity, they forged a legacy that still resonates today. “Only by knowing our history and loving our country can the flame of patriotism be passed on. Only by remembering history can we create the future,” Lee reminded attendees.
To fuel this historical spark, the HKSAR government has lined up a series of activities—an official ceremony on September 3, educational workshops, film screenings and more—all designed to engage young people and nurture deep-rooted love for the nation.
As Hong Kong reflects on this eight-decade milestone, the message is clear: honoring the past through storytelling and shared experience is not just about remembrance—it’s a roadmap for unity and progress in a fast-paced world.
