Extreme Heatwave Scorches California and Southwest U.S.

An intense heatwave has swept across California and the U.S. Southwest, pushing temperatures into the sweltering range and raising public health and wildfire alarms. From Los Angeles to Phoenix, cities are grappling with prolonged high heat and limited relief in sight.

Local officials have issued heat advisories, urging residents to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activities, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Cooling centers have opened in urban areas, but experts warn that prolonged exposure to high temperatures can lead to heat exhaustion, dehydration, and other serious health risks.

Compounding the crisis is an elevated wildfire threat across several states. Dry vegetation and persistent heat create a tinderbox scenario, prompting fire agencies to be on high alert. Any spark, from downed power lines to unattended campfires, could ignite rapidly spreading blazes.

While emergency services mobilize to keep communities safe, meteorologists say relief won't arrive until early next week, when a shift in the weather pattern may bring cooler air and lower temperatures. Until then, heat-stressed regions are bracing for one of the toughest tests of the summer so far.
