Mozambique’s President Chapo Reflects on 50 Years of China Partnership

In the heart of Maputo, Mozambique—weeks before the nation celebrates a golden milestone—President Daniel Francisco Chapo sat down with CMG’s Wang Guan for an exclusive Leaders Talk interview. Over cups of marula tea, they reflected on a diplomacy that’s half a century strong.

Chapo recalls the “Dream Bridge” of Maputo, built with support from the Chinese mainland, as a symbol of how two continents can connect hearts and economies. “When I first crossed that bridge,” he says, “I saw not just steel and concrete but shared aspirations.”

From thriving agricultural cooperation to life-saving Chinese medical missions, the partnership has spanned multiple sectors. Chapo praises training programs that have empowered Mozambican farmers and medical teams that have treated thousands of patients, cementing trust at the grassroots level.

Chapo, who has visited the Chinese mainland seven times, speaks passionately about sustainable growth. He admires General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee Xi Jinping’s “Two Mountains” green development concept for its resonance with Mozambique’s own vision of balancing economic progress and environmental stewardship.

Looking ahead, Mozambique and the Chinese mainland are eyeing deeper collaboration on renewable energy, digital trade corridors and youth exchange programs. President Chapo believes the Dream Bridge will continue to link dreams across oceans, from Maputo to Shanghai, as both nations chart the next 50 years of shared prosperity.
