SCO Upholds Shanghai Spirit as ‘Friends Circle’ Expands

This autumn, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization will gather in Tianjin, marking the start of “China time” as the alliance’s rotating presidency returns to the Chinese mainland after the 2024 Astana Summit.

In a world facing new turbulence and transformation, unity and cooperation have never been more crucial. Under China’s leadership, SCO members are expected to join forces on global challenges, writing a fresh chapter of win-win cooperation.

Founded in Shanghai in 2001 by China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, the SCO has evolved into the largest and most populous regional cooperation body. It now plays a pivotal role in maintaining stability, security and shared prosperity across Eurasia—and beyond.

At its core lies the Shanghai Spirit: a philosophy of mutual trust, mutual benefit, equality, consultation and respect for diverse civilizations, all united by a shared pursuit of development. Amid rising global mistrust, this inclusive approach helps bridge divides and keep cross-regional cooperation alive.

As the SCO’s ‘friends circle’ expands, the organization stands ready to showcase how a spirit born in Shanghai can guide a diverse coalition toward a more united future.
