At the recent Boao Forum for Asia Global Health Forum, Carsten Schicker, CEO of the World Health Summit, argued that global health has long been shaped by Northern agendas and that today's crisis offers a chance to rewrite the rules.
"Global health, for too many years, has been dominated by the Global North," Schicker told CGTN. "The crisis we are now facing creates the opportunity to build a global health system that is more equitable and more inclusive than what we had before."
Founded in 2009, the World Health Summit brings together policymakers, academics, industry experts and civil society leaders to forge new paths in health policy. As geopolitical tensions and trust gaps grow, Schicker calls for renewed leadership and deeper South-South cooperation to build a more resilient system.
He sees the Chinese mainland as a key partner in this movement, highlighting its role in mobilizing resources and expertise across emerging economies. For Schicker, empowering the Global South isn't just a slogan – it's a blueprint for a healthier world.
With stronger ties among Global South countries and regions, the goal is clear: an inclusive health governance model where every voice shapes the response to future pandemics.
