China Champions Cambodia-Thailand Ceasefire as Border Clashes Persist

In a Sunday briefing, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry reaffirmed that China remains “fair and impartial” in its push for a lasting ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand. With cross-border tensions flaring, Beijing says it is ready to facilitate talks and play a “constructive role” in restoring peace.

According to regional media, sporadic clashes continue along the frontier, with artillery fire damaging homes on both sides. A house in Thailand’s Surin province was reduced to ashes after Cambodian shells struck early that morning, underscoring the urgency of halting hostilities.

“Cambodia and Thailand are neighbors and friends of China,” the spokesperson emphasized. “Maintaining good-neighborliness, mutual trust and properly managing differences serve the two countries’ fundamental and long-term interests—and the region’s peace and stability.”

The spokesperson expressed deep sorrow over casualties on both sides and extended heartfelt sympathies to affected communities. China urged both capitals to “cherish peace, exercise calm and restraint” and to pursue a ceasefire “as soon as possible.” Through dialogue and consultation, the spokesperson said, the two sides can settle disputes and restore stability along the border.

As founding members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, Cambodia and Thailand have seen intense diplomatic efforts in recent days. China commended ASEAN’s mediation push and welcomed “all efforts conducive to de-escalation.”
