UN Calls for Calm as Thailand and Cambodia Trade Border Strikes

Thailand and Cambodia clashed for a second day along their contested border, exchanging artillery and rockets in a long-simmering dispute that prompted an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council.

At the United Nations, Cambodia's ambassador Chhea Keo urged an immediate, unconditional ceasefire and appealed for a peaceful, diplomatic solution. Thai officials signaled they were open to talks, potentially brokered by Malaysia, which currently chairs ASEAN.

On the ground in Oddar Meanchey province, a 70-year-old man was killed and five others wounded as sporadic artillery fire echoed from Cambodia's side. In Thailand, more than 138,000 residents were evacuated amid 15 reported fatalities (14 civilians, one soldier) and 46 wounded.

Fighting resumed early Friday with Cambodia deploying heavy weapons and BM-21 rocket systems, met by Thai forces with supporting fire. By afternoon, Bangkok reported a relative lull as both sides faced calls from the Security Council to show maximum restraint.

The standoff highlights the human cost when diplomacy falters and underscores the urgent need for dialogue. For global citizens watching, it's a reminder of the power—and fragility—of peace in diverse borderlands.
