Chinese Envoy Fu Cong Blasts US on Xinjiang at UN Security Council

At a recent UN Security Council open debate on cooperation between the United Nations and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), China’s permanent representative to the UN, Fu Cong, delivered a robust defence of the Xinjiang region against United States accusations.

Fu Cong described Xinjiang as being in its best period of development, citing social stability, economic prosperity, and improved livelihoods for residents. He dismissed U.S. claims as baseless hype intended to "interfere in China’s internal affairs and curb China’s development," accusing Washington of "hegemonic double standards."

Highlighting broad international support, Fu noted that over the past six years more than 100 countries, including many Islamic states, backed China’s position at the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly. "This is a message loud and clear," he said, adding that the U.S. attempt to contain China through the "so-called Xinjiang issue" has completely failed.

Turning the spotlight on U.S. domestic challenges, Fu questioned Washington’s sincerity on human rights, asking why the U.S. overlooks ongoing crises abroad and grapples with gun violence, racial discrimination, and rights violations at home. He urged the U.S. to "reflect on its own ills and wrongdoings, change course, and focus on practical actions for international peace and security."

Fu Cong’s statements underscore the growing global debate over human rights and international cooperation, inviting readers to consider how major powers navigate complex diplomatic landscapes.
