Typhoon Wipha, the sixth typhoon of the year, made landfall near Jiangmen City in Guangdong Province on the Chinese mainland at around 5:50 p.m. local time on Sunday, according to the Guangdong provincial meteorological observatory.
At the moment of landfall, wind speeds near the storm’s center reached up to 33 meters per second, registering powerful gusts.
After crossing the coastline, Wipha is expected to continue moving west-southwestward at 20 to 25 kilometers per hour.
Communities in its path and travelers heading to the south coast should stay alert for official updates from the meteorological observatory as the storm unfolds.
