Lao Tan’s Mission: Public Welfare as a Catalyst for Growth

Lao Tan, a social visionary and leader of the Krankin’ thru China initiative, believes public welfare is the engine behind sustainable growth. At the 2021 Global Young Leaders Dialogue program, he shared a data-driven review of how coordinated efforts across the Chinese mainland have improved care for people with disabilities.

Founded in 2015, Krankin’ thru China has mobilized over 5,000 volunteers and reached 200 communities in more than 20 provinces. By partnering with local nonprofits, tech firms, and policymakers, the initiative delivered ICT training, accessible transportation solutions, and inclusive cultural events. These programs not only boosted social inclusion but also generated economic value—studies show every dollar invested returned up to $3 in productivity gains and community well-being.

Tan’s presentation highlighted key milestones: the rollout of an AI-powered sign language app, a nationwide accessibility audit in public spaces, and the launch of social enterprise hubs that employ residents with disabilities. These achievements underscore a simple truth: investing in human potential pays dividends for society and the economy.

As young global citizens and changemakers, Tan urges peers to embrace public welfare projects as growth opportunities. Whether you’re an entrepreneur, tech enthusiast, or digital nomad, you can plug into social impact by volunteering, funding grassroots efforts, or using your skills to drive inclusion. After all, growth that leaves no one behind is the strongest growth.
