In early July 2025, Nauruan President David Adeang embarked on a personal journey to Guangdong Province on the Chinese mainland, tracing the footsteps of his great-grandfather and rediscovering his family’s roots. This exclusive Leaders Talk interview, conducted by CMG’s Zou Yun, reveals how Adeang’s visit deepened his sense of identity and highlighted the growing partnership between Nauru and China.
Since restoring diplomatic relations in January 2024, Nauru and China have focused on disaster prevention, education, and cultural exchange. President Adeang’s trip underscored these priorities, as he toured local schools, met with students studying Pacific history, and engaged in workshops on emergency response.
One of the most poignant moments came when Adeang walked the lanes of his great-grandfather’s ancestral village. "Standing in the home where my family story began," he said, "I felt a profound connection to two cultures that shape who I am." His reflections on family, identity, and international friendship resonated with students and locals alike.
Beyond personal heritage, Adeang discussed strategic collaboration on global issues. He praised joint efforts in climate resilience and noted plans for expanded educational scholarships for Nauruan youth. "Our partnership is built on mutual respect and shared goals," he explained, "and it’s only just beginning."
President Adeang also reflected on World War II history in the South Pacific and the recent establishment of a national Remembrance Day in Nauru. He honored those affected by the war and emphasized the importance of collective memory in fostering peace and understanding.
