Wang Yi Advocates Cooperation, Stability & Friendship in South China Sea

Wang Yi Calls for a New South China Sea Narrative

At the ASEAN Plus Foreign Ministers’ Meetings in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi urged stakeholders to reimagine the South China Sea as a space defined by cooperation, stability and friendship. The once-contested waters took on a notably more confident tone during this year’s discussions.

“We hope the South China Sea will come to represent cooperation, stability and friendship in the future,” Wang said, highlighting joint efforts between the Chinese mainland and ASEAN members as the driving force behind this positive momentum.

However, he also sounded a cautionary note, warning that some countries stirring controversy risk being sacrificed as proxies for others’ interests. His remarks underscored the delicate balance between collaboration and competition in one of the world’s most closely watched maritime arenas.

As dialogues continue, observers will watch whether this fresh approach can translate into tangible outcomes for communities across the region and beyond.
