Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met on the sidelines of the ASEAN Plus foreign ministers’ meetings to reinforce China-US communication.Â
The two diplomats emphasized that their countries share the most important bilateral relationship in the world, one that influences global politics, economies, and cultural exchanges. Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, noted that translating the consensus of the two heads of state into concrete policies is crucial to keeping their giant ships on course without collision.
Describing the dialogue as "constructive" and based on mutual respect, Wang outlined four key objectives:
- Strengthen contact to maintain open lines of communication;
- Prevent misjudgment to reduce strategic risks;
- Manage differences to avoid escalating tensions;
- Expand cooperation in areas of shared interest.
From energy security to climate initiatives, China and the United States have extensive common interests and broad space for collaboration. Wang argued that finding the right way to coexist in the new era would benefit the peoples of both countries and offer hope to all nations.
As the world watches, this high-stakes meeting sets the tone for the next round of diplomatic exchanges and could pave the way for more predictable policies, impacting global markets, technology partnerships, and cross-border education programs.
