The world\u0019s largest solar-powered car carrier, the "Yuan Hai Kou," has successfully completed its maiden voyage, docking at Piraeus Port in Greece with 4,000 vehicles from the Chinese mainland on board. This landmark journey marks a major step in low-carbon global shipping.

Equipped with a 302.8-kilowatt solar system\u0012the largest of its kind\u0012the vessel generates 410,000 kWh annually, slashing carbon intensity by 35% over its lifecycle compared to conventional carriers. A dual-fuel engine running on liquefied natural gas (LNG) and fuel oil further reduces energy use by 20% and cuts carbon emissions by over 24%. On a round trip between the Chinese mainland and Europe, it avoids 2,100 tonnes of CO₂.

Measuring 199.9 m in length, with a gross tonnage of 68,252 t and a displacement of 39,069 t, the "Yuan Hai Kou" features 12 vehicle decks\u0012eight fixed and four adjustable\u0012and can carry up to 7,000 cars, along with engineering trucks and buses. Proprietary software enables real-time vehicle tracking and fire warnings, boosting safety for new energy vehicle exports.

"The successful maiden voyage of the 'Yuan Hai Kou' is a practical step forward in COSCO Shipping's global channel strategy, integrating shipping, ports and logistics while setting a new benchmark for low-carbon transformation in the global shipping industry," said Zhang Wei, chairman of COSCO Shipping Specialized Carriers Co., Ltd.

From January to May this year, COSCO Shipping Specialized Carriers' fleet has moved over 100,000 vehicles to Belt and Road partner countries\u0012a 173% year-on-year surge\u0012underscoring rising demand for sustainable trade solutions.
