Rebuilding Zheng He’s Ming Treasure Ship in Taiwan

Rediscovering a Maritime Masterpiece

On the eve of the 2025 Dragon Boat Festival, artisan Xu Lu set out at Yuegang Port, laying keels and carving hull planks to rebuild a replica of one of the celebrated Ming Dynasty admiral Zheng He's treasure ships. It's the latest project in his decade-long mission to bring ancient maritime heritage to life.

A Voyage Across the Taiwan Strait

Since 2013, Xu Lu has crossed the Taiwan Strait multiple times, each trip powered by his passion for wooden shipbuilding. Using centuries-old techniques: hand-shaped beams, bamboo sails, and natural fiber ropes, he blends tradition with eco-conscious craft.

Cultural Currents and Green Innovation

Historians, sustainability advocates, and young global citizens are drawn to Xu Lu's workshop. His replicas not only honor a golden age of global trade between Asia and Africa but also spark conversations about modern green shipbuilding and cultural preservation.

Setting Sail into Tomorrow

With a planned launch next spring, Xu Lu aims to invite students, influencers, and travelers aboard for immersive voyages. It's a hands-on lesson in maritime history, craftsmanship, and the interconnected world still shaped by Zheng He's legacy.
