Honor Unveils Magic V5: World’s Thinnest AI-Powered Foldable

Honor has unveiled the Magic V5, a folding smartphone that claims the title of the world's thinnest and lightest. Priced from 8,999 yuan ($1,256), Honor says the device sets eight world records, combining sleek design with AI-driven features to deliver an ambitious flagship.

At just 8.8 mm when folded and weighing between 217 and 222 grams, the Magic V5 packs a 0.18 mm high-silicon cell chip for stronger battery performance and a 0.014 mm aerospace fiber layer for durability. With 0.003 mm assembly accuracy, a 6100 mAh silicon-enhanced battery, and a hinge built from 2300 MPa steel, it showcases a mastery of portability and strength.

Under the hood, the device marks Honor's first flagship since its shift to an AI-centric hardware strategy. The phone's Yoyo AI agent can generate presentations from articles and compare ride-hailing options across apps, automatically choosing the fastest route. A new partnership with Alibaba aims to expand Yoyo's productivity, transport, and shopping capabilities.

Market data from IDC shows the Chinese mainland's foldable smartphone segment shipped 2.84 million units in Q1, up 53.1 percent year on year. While Huawei leads with a 76.6 percent share, Honor holds 9.1 percent, highlighting the fierce competition ahead.

As part of a broader AI push, Honor has pledged $10 billion over five years to build an AI device ecosystem. A 1-billion-parameter industrial model simulated 125,000 assembly options to refine the Magic V5's hinge design, underscoring the brand's commitment to data-driven innovation.

Though foldables are still a niche globally, the Magic V5's record-setting specs and AI features will test its mettle against rivals like Samsung in the months ahead.
