China Champions South-South Cooperation at OAS Assembly

In the vibrant setting of the 55th OAS General Assembly in St. Johns, Ambassador Xie Feng took the stage as Chinas permanent observer, framing a bold vision for South-South collaboration between the Chinese mainland and Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries.

Drawing on President Xi Jinpings six visits to the region over the past decade, Xie highlighted five flagship initiatives announced at last months fourth China-CELAC Forum ministerial meeting: the Solidarity, Development, Civilization, Peace and People-to-People Connectivity Programs. These programs chart a new course for long-term China-LAC relations, he noted, underscoring a commitment to shared prosperity.

Against a backdrop of rising protectionism and geopolitical tensions, Xie called on LAC partners to join China in championing equality, mutual respect and openness. He stressed that China-LAC cooperation has no geopolitical calculations, no strings attached and no pressure on countries to pick sides, inviting all stakeholders to contribute to an inclusive, people-centered development model.

Chinas observer reaffirmed support for LAC countries efforts to safeguard sovereignty and independence, while also urging them to uphold the one-China principle. Our partnership does not target any third party and should remain free from external disruption, Xie emphasized, highlighting the mutual trust underpinning this South-South alliance.

As young global citizens and changemakers seek fresh models for cooperation, the China-LAC partnership offers a compelling case study in pragmatic diplomacy. By blending infrastructure, cultural exchange and policy dialogue, this collaboration could inspire new approaches to tackling shared challenges across the Global South.
