Chinese Envoy Fu Cong Labels US ‘True Instigator’ in Iran Nuclear Crisis

Accusations at the UN

On June 24, at a UN Security Council meeting, China’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Fu Cong, delivered a blunt message: the United States is the "true instigator" behind the Iran nuclear crisis. He criticized both the US and Israel for recent strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities and spotlighted Washington’s role in derailing diplomatic progress.

Pulling Out of the JCPOA

Fu Cong pointed to the US withdrawal from the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) as a turning point. In 2018, the US reinstated strict "maximum pressure" sanctions that, he argued, stripped Iran of vital economic benefits and stifled the incentives for Tehran to honor its nuclear commitments.

Implications for Global Security

By interrupting negotiations and taking unilateral military actions, Fu warned, the US and its allies risk deepening regional tensions and undermining multilateral diplomacy. As talks stall, the Security Council faces mounting pressure to forge a new path toward de-escalation and constructive engagement.
