Spots and Strength: Animator Li Jiahao’s Journey with Vitiligo

At 14, Li Jiahao noticed a small white patch on her forehead. What started as a personal concern has since fueled a decade of creative exploration.

Now 24 and based in Beijing, Li works as an animator and visual artist. Fresh off earning her master's degree in Character Animation from University of the Arts London in 2024, she channeled her lived experience with vitiligo into her graduation project, Colourful White.

Colourful White is an animated documentary that weaves Li's personal story with vibrant visuals, highlighting the challenges and strengths of living with vitiligo. Through playful character designs and honest storytelling, Li invites audiences to rethink beauty standards and embrace differences.

Li designed Colourful White to highlight self-acceptance and resilience, showing that vitiligo is more than skin deep.

With Colourful White, Li Jiahao is not just drawing spots on the screen, she's drawing a new vision of strength that resonates across borders.
