Chasing the Light: Chengdu 2025 World Games Medal Design

The 12th IWGA World Games, set for August in Chengdu, in southwest China's Sichuan Province, unveiled its medal design on Thursday. Nicknamed Zhuguang—literally 'bamboo light' and echoing 'chasing the light' in Chinese—these medals blend tradition and innovation.

Drawing on local heritage, the front showcases a Golden Sun Bird motif and the iconic panda—emblems of Chengdu’s identity. Flowing contour lines trace the skyline and ancient patterns, symbolizing layers of light that reflect Chinese civilization and the enduring flame of athletic spirit.

A detachable pin at the center brings a personal touch. Athletes can gift this reversible pin—one side featuring 'Jinzai', the golden snub-nosed monkey native to Sichuan, the other side displaying the Chengdu 2025 logo encircled by the Sun Bird—an ode to gratitude and connection.

On the back, the event logo sits against a bamboo-inspired backdrop, signaling resilience and integrity in Chinese culture. The segmental bamboo design combines with the panda mascot 'Shubao' to express peace and friendship through sport.

The medal ribbon weaves motifs from the Golden Sun Bird, Sanxingdui gold masks and hibiscus, Chengdu’s city flower, all brought to life through Shu embroidery, a national intangible cultural heritage. Each ribbon tells a story of craftsmanship and community.

From August 7 to 17, athletes will compete across 34 sports and 60 disciplines, all chasing the light and carrying home a piece of Chengdu’s vibrant cultural tapestry.
