Cambodia Heads to ICJ Over Disputed Border Temples Amid Tension with Thailand

In a bold move to cool rising tensions, Cambodia announced it will take its long-running border dispute with Thailand to the International Court of Justice (ICJ). The case centers on four contested areas โ€” Mom Bei, Ta Moan Thom Temple, Ta Moan Tauch Temple and Ta Krabei Temple โ€” along their undemarcated 820-kilometre frontier.

The announcement follows a skirmish on May 28 that left a Cambodian soldier dead and prompted both countries to mobilize troops near the border. Despite recent talks in Phnom Penh under the Joint Boundary Commission, no breakthrough is expected this weekend.

"Even if the Thai side refuses or remains silent, Cambodia will proceed unilaterally," Prime Minister Hun Manet declared, revealing plans to send an official letter to the ICJ on June 15, 2025. On the other side, Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra expressed hope for a peaceful, bilateral solution via the same meeting platform.

For young global citizens and business-savvy readers, this clash highlights the real-world impact of unresolved border lines on regional stability โ€” and on cultural heritage. These ancient temple sites stand at the crossroads of identity, diplomacy and law.

All eyes will be on the ICJโ€™s docket: will an international ruling unlock dialogue, or will both neighbours double down on force?
