Record-Breaking Ridership
China’s railway network carried a staggering 1.86 billion passengers in the first five months of 2025, up 7.3% from the same period last year. This milestone cements the network’s status as a vital artery for both domestic travel and economic activity.
More Trains, Smoother Journeys
On average, 11,243 trains rolled out each day—7.5% more than a year ago. The busiest day? May 1, the kickoff of the May Day holiday, when operators dispatched 13,752 trains, moving over 23 million people in a single day—a double record for trains in service and passenger trips.
Attracting Global Travelers
As visa-free entry expands, the network is drawing more international riders. From January to May, foreign nationals made 7.67 million rail trips—a 29% surge—highlighting China’s growing appeal for tourists and business travelers alike.
Cross-Border Connections Grow
International routes are also seeing rapid growth. The China–Laos Railway, a landmark Belt and Road project, recorded 124,000 passenger trips—up 24.2% year on year—showing that regional rail links are gaining traction among global nomads and regional commuters.
Tracks to the Future
With ridership and international interest both on the rise, China’s railways are on track for further expansion. For young global citizens and digital nomads, smarter ticketing, greener trains, and improved cross-border services promise a smoother ride and new adventures ahead.
