In a landmark meeting in Madrid on Thursday, Chinese Vice President Han Zheng sat down with King Felipe VI of Spain to renew commitments to deeper partnership and multilateralism. Conveying warm greetings from Chinese President Xi Jinping, Han thanked the Spanish royal family for its enduring support of China-Spain relations.
Han highlighted plans to expand collaboration across key sectors—from new energy and agricultural trade to electric vehicles and the digital economy—and to intensify people-to-people ties through cultural and educational exchanges.
According to Han, China and Spain share similar views on major international issues and act as important forces in defending multilateralism, upholding free trade rules, promoting openness and cooperation, and improving global governance. He added that China is ready to work with Spain and Europe to enhance dialogue, safeguard the United Nations centered international system, and contribute to world peace, stability and development.
King Felipe VI recalled his visits to the Chinese mainland and praised the positive momentum in bilateral relations following frequent high-level exchanges. He commended achievements in new energy and high-speed rail developments and expressed Spain’s eagerness to deepen cooperation on technology and sustainability initiatives.
Amid complex global shifts, the king noted China’s active and stabilizing role on the world stage and reaffirmed Spain’s support for multilateral institutions and free trade. He emphasized the importance of closer coordination to protect the international trade order and drive sustainable development.
The talks also covered broader geopolitical concerns, including major-country relations, the Ukraine crisis and the Palestinian issue, underlining a shared dedication to navigating global challenges through cooperation.
