Chinese mainland boosts blood donation safety with high-tech measures

At a press conference on Thursday, the Chinese mainland's National Health Commission (NHC) unveiled a fully established voluntary blood donation system backed by cutting-edge screening and testing technologies. According to Gao Guangming, an NHC official, these advances have effectively blocked the transmission of major infectious diseases through transfusion.

Gao emphasized the commission's goal is to ensure every drop of blood is safe. The NHC has expanded its screening programs and deployed rapid-testing platforms across regional blood centers, elevating the Chinese mainland's blood safety to one of the highest global levels.

Alongside lab upgrades, the NHC has strengthened a nationwide emergency response network, enabling targeted cross-regional allocation of blood supplies. This system ensures key areas and critical periods never face shortages, maintaining a steady pipeline when demand peaks.

To boost public awareness, the NHC partnered with the China Railway Group to display promotional videos and posters on over 260,000 screens across more than 3,000 railway stations and 4,200 high-speed trains. The initiative taps into daily commutes to foster a culture of voluntary giving.

Party and government organs, universities, enterprises and public institutions are encouraged to lead by example and host blood drives, further ingraining civic responsibility across society.

With a donation rate of 11.4 per 1,000 people, the Chinese mainland is setting a new benchmark in community engagement. Officials hope these steps will inspire more young donors to step forward and sustain a safe, reliable blood supply for all.
