A Sudden Show of Force
Over 200 protesters clashed with National Guard troops in downtown Los Angeles on Sunday, marking an intense escalation during demonstrations sparked by immigration raids across California.
Footage from local news channel ABC 7 showed the troops, sent by the Trump administration, merging into the tense standoff. This is the first time since 1965 that a president has activated a state’s National Guard force without a governor’s request, according to Elizabeth Goitein of the Brennan Center for Justice.
On the Ground
“We want to protest peacefully. However, the Trump administration just sent soldiers to fight against us. Is it necessary?” one protester told Xinhua.
Meanwhile, California Governor Gavin Newsom urged calm: “California – Don’t give Donald Trump what he wants. Speak up. Stay peaceful. Stay calm. Do not use violence and respect the law enforcement officers that are trying their best to keep the peace.”
Next Steps
The clashes followed a two-day series of raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement and other federal agencies since June 6, which led to more than 100 arrests. Washington has vowed to continue these operations despite opposition from local communities and officials.
The unfolding events spotlight rising tensions over immigration policy and federal intervention in state affairs, a debate reverberating far beyond California’s borders.
