Haaland Stars in Norway’s 3-0 Rout of Italy in World Cup Qualifier

In a commanding performance at Oslo’s Ullevaal Stadium, Erling Haaland showcased why he’s one of football’s most feared finishers, helping Norway to a historic 3-0 victory over Italy in 2026 World Cup qualifying.

It was Haaland’s 41st goal in just 42 appearances for his country. After Martin Ødegaard threaded a perfect pass into the box, Haaland calmly rounded goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma three minutes before halftime, sealing Norway’s first 3-0 qualifying win over Italy in 25 years in front of a sold-out crowd that included King Harald V.

Norway remains perfect in Group I with three wins from three games, following earlier wins against Moldova (5-0) and Israel (4-2). Striker Alexander Sørloth opened the scoring after a slick assist from 20-year-old Antonio Nusa, who then doubled the advantage with a rising shot inside the area, highlighting Norway’s blend of experience and emerging talent.

Italy arrived in Oslo depleted by injuries to key defenders Alessandro Buongiorno and Mattia Gabbia, while Manuel Locatelli and Moise Kean were also sidelined. Coach Luciano Spalletti’s three-man defense, marshaled by teenager Diego Coppola, struggled to contain Norway’s pace and precision.

Elsewhere in Group I, Israel beat Estonia 3-1 to move into second place. For Italy, topping the group is crucial for direct qualification to North America 2026; finishing second would mean another playoff gamble after missing the last two World Cups.

Next up, Italy will host Moldova, while Norway travels to Estonia aiming to extend their flawless start.
