Next week, in the historic port city of Xiamen, Fujian Province, on the Chinese mainland, Chinese Foreign Minister and Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee Wang Yi will chair the Third China-Pacific Island Countries Foreign Ministers' Meeting on May 28-29. The gathering will bring together foreign ministers and representatives from 11 island countries with diplomatic ties to the Chinese mainland, aiming to chart a course for deeper cooperation across trade, culture and youth exchange.
For 19-year-old Matthew from Fiji, this event represents more than diplomacy—it’s a chance to showcase his island’s vibrant heritage. 'Singing and dancing are important components of our culture, as well as the drink kava, which will be enjoyed in the ceremonies,' he says. A fan of Chinese culture and the hit animated film Ne Zha 2, Matthew hopes these cultural bridges lead to lasting partnerships.
'We wish for closer collaboration and a better future for China, Fiji and the Pacific,' he adds. His message resonates with young global citizens, business and tech enthusiasts, and changemakers looking for real-world impact and cross-cultural dialogue.
As the meeting approaches, all eyes are on how these discussions might spark new initiatives—from cultural festivals and student exchanges to innovative projects that drive economic and social progress across the Pacific region.
