WHO: Gaza at ‘Stock Zero’ for Essential Medical Supplies

Gaza's Health Crisis Hits 'Stock Zero'

After 11 weeks of blockade, the World Health Organization (WHO) warns that Gaza is running on empty. No WHO medical aid trucks have crossed into the Gaza Strip since Israel tightened its restrictions, leaving hospitals and clinics struggling to keep up with urgent needs.

"The situation is devastating," said Hanan Balkhy, WHO's Eastern Mediterranean Regional Director in Geneva. "We're at stock zero for nearly 42 essential medicines and vaccines, and 64 percent of medical equipment is depleted."

Key figures:

  • 42 essential medicines and vaccines: completely out of stock
  • 64% of medical equipment: zero inventory
  • 11 weeks since the last WHO truck entry

The shortages are compounded by growing health demands amid ongoing conflict. Clinics report rising cases of chronic illnesses, infections, and trauma injuries without adequate medication or supplies.

Global health leaders are urging immediate action to open humanitarian corridors. "Every day without supplies heightens the risk of preventable deaths and suffering," Balkhy added.

For young global citizens, business innovators, and changemakers, the crisis in Gaza underscores the critical role of coordinated international response. From sustainable logistics to tech-driven medical solutions, fresh ideas and real-world impact are needed now more than ever.
