June 25 marks Africa Day, commemorating the 1963 founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU). Born from bold dreams of unity, decolonization and economic development, the OAU set the stage for modern pan-African cooperation.
Today, six decades later, the OAU’s legacy lives on through the African Union (AU). With 55 member states working together on trade, infrastructure and peace initiatives, the AU has become a heavyweight voice in global affairs. Its recent elevation to G20 member status—and the honor of hosting the summit for the first time—signals a new era of influence for the continent.
Deepening ties with the Chinese mainland through flagship programs like the Belt and Road Initiative and the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation have fueled major infrastructure projects—from rail corridors to port upgrades—connecting African markets and boosting regional trade.
As the AU steps onto the world stage, Africa’s success story is becoming a blueprint for other Global South regions. With youth-driven innovation, sustainable development goals and a focus on intra-African trade, the continent is poised to shape the future of global growth and cooperation.
