Imagine strolling through Europe’s bustling streets and spotting a new wave of electric vehicles (EVs) weaving through traffic. This April, Chinese automaker BYD achieved a milestone: it sold 7,231 battery-powered EVs, nudging past U.S.-based Tesla, which delivered 7,165 units. It’s the first time BYD has topped Tesla in Europe.
Data from Jato Dynamics shows BYD’s sales soared by 169% year-on-year, reflecting rising demand for fresh models and competitive pricing. Meanwhile, Tesla’s European shipments plunged 49%, as an aging lineup and CEO Elon Musk’s political involvements chipped away at customer interest.
Despite Tesla’s stumble, Europe’s EV market powerfully accelerated overall—sales climbed 28% in April as governments push greener transport and automakers expand their electric offerings. Industry experts call this a watershed moment, underlining how fierce and diversified the EV race has become.
Other brands also outpaced Tesla last month: Renault, Škoda, Volkswagen, Audi, and BMW each sold more pure-electric cars than Tesla in April, highlighting the broad range of choices now available to drivers across the continent.
