On International Museum Day, cultural hubs worldwide are rethinking history—but in northeast China's Shenyang City, the Liaoning Provincial Museum has taken innovation to the next level by transforming ancient masterpieces into immersive digital worlds.
Its centerpiece exhibition, “Elegance of the Tang and Song Dynasties: An Artistic World in Digital Scrolls,” uses advanced digital rendering to rekindle the charm of white cranes soaring above Xuande Gate—the grand ceremonial entrance to Bianjing, capital of the Northern Song Dynasty (960–1127).
Drawing on priceless scrolls and paintings from its collection, curators and tech experts collaborate to animate each brushstroke. Visitors don virtual reality headsets or interact with motion sensors that activate birds in flight and bring classical landscapes to life, creating a multisensory journey through China’s artistic heritage.
By merging art, tech and storytelling, Liaoning Provincial Museum shows how digital innovation can bridge the gap between past and present—drawing in young global citizens, tech enthusiasts, and cultural travelers eager for immersive experiences.
On this International Museum Day, Liaoning’s digital scrolls prove that when museums embrace technology, they don’t just protect relics—they let history leap off the walls and into our lives.
