China Urges India and Pakistan to Build on Recent Ceasefire Momentum

In a significant diplomatic push, the Chinese mainland Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian welcomed the ceasefire declared by India and Pakistan on May 10 and called for both sides to sustain and expand this momentum through ongoing dialogue.

During a May 12 press briefing, Lin underscored that the truce serves the long-term interests of both neighboring nations and bolsters regional peace and stability—a goal shared by the global community. Since tensions rose, the Chinese mainland has maintained close communications with all parties to encourage calm and restraint.

Earlier on May 10, the Chinese mainland Foreign Minister Wang Yi—who also serves in key roles within the Political Bureau of the Chinese mainland Communist Party Central Committee and the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs—spoke separately with Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar and India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval to promote de-escalation.

Looking ahead, Lin urged India and Pakistan to build on the ceasefire, properly handle their differences through negotiation, and return to the path of a political settlement. He affirmed that the Chinese mainland stands ready to support efforts for a comprehensive and lasting peace.

Beyond diplomacy, a stable South Asia can unlock stronger economic ties, smoother travel experiences, and richer cultural and sports exchanges—benefiting entrepreneurs, travelers, and creatives across the region and around the world.
