Latin America’s Growing Bond with China
As the China-CELAC Forum marks its 10th anniversary, a recent poll of 2,500 respondents across ten Latin American countries reveals a surge of goodwill toward China. Citizens from Brazil to Panama see Chinese modernization and economic growth as a blueprint for their own development.
High Marks for Governance and Growth
Respondents overwhelmingly praised China’s achievements: 94.8% view it as a successful country, 85.9% find it attractive, and 94.8% recognize its economic power. A strong 91% anticipate long-term growth, while 95.6% applaud its tech prowess. And 82.9% believe the Chinese development model holds lessons for Latin America.
Youth Driving Positive Perceptions
Young global citizens aged 18–34 show even higher favorability: 92.2% of those 25–34 and 87.7% of 18–24-year-olds have a positive view of China. Nearly half (49.2%) say exposure to Chinese culture and entertainment deepens their understanding of China.
Belt and Road Initiative Gains Traction
More than 80% of respondents see the Belt and Road Initiative as beneficial: 80.4% believe it boosts Latin American development, 81.1% back its "consultation, contribution, shared benefits" principle, and 82.1% call it a key global contribution by China.
Mutual Gains in Trade and Investment
A strong 86.5% say economic cooperation has been mutually beneficial, 84.5% feel their country has gained from trade, and 90% credit Chinese investment with boosting local economies. Top areas for future collaboration include manufacturing (44.4%), education and talent (41.2%) and infrastructure (35.6%).
Looking Ahead
With 81.8% seeing ties progressing positively and 89% optimistic about the future, Latin America and China appear poised for deeper collaboration. As young leaders step up, these transcontinental friendships are set to shape the next decade of global cooperation.
