French Army on Track for Combat-Ready Robots by 2040

France's armed forces are on track to field battle-ready robots by 2040, according to participants in a recent multi-week test west of Paris.

Combining the talents of engineers, researchers, and defense contractors, this third exercise since the 2040 target was set four years ago put robots fitted with legs, wheels, and treads through obstacle courses and trap scenarios designed to simulate frontline conditions.

"We hope to have something fairly evolved within three years, with the first ground robot capabilities ready to equip our forces," said General Bruno Baratz, the army's commander of future combat.

The trials showcased how autonomous systems can hold ground, navigate complex terrains, and support troops on evolving battlefields. As technology races forward, Europe watches closely, and the French experiment offers a glimpse at tomorrow's front line.
