Macao Bridges Portugal and China to Strengthen 50-Year Sino-EU Ties

As China and the EU celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations, Macao emerges as a vibrant hub linking Portugal and China. Thanks to its unique blend of European heritage and Chinese innovation, the region is facilitating new pathways for business, culture and technology.

José Alves, dean of the City University of Macao's Faculty of Business and co-founder of the 929 Challenge Sino-Portuguese startup competition, explains why Macao is more than a historical waypoint. "Macao stands at the crossroads of East and West," he says. "By leveraging Portuguese-speaking networks alongside China’s economic dynamism, the territory can drive investment, spark innovation and deepen mutual understanding."

The 929 Challenge has already drawn dozens of startups from Portugal and Macao, tackling sectors from green tech to digital finance. Through mentorship programs, networking events and cross-border pilot projects, entrepreneurs are building solutions that resonate across Europe and Asia.

Looking ahead, Alves sees Macao as a scalable model for EU–China collaboration. As policymakers and business leaders seek fresh avenues for engagement, the lessons from Sino-Portuguese cooperation could pave the way for deeper ties across the digital economy, sustainable development and education.
