Over 10,000 visitors streamed through the Chinese mainland embassy in Washington, D.C., for its annual Open Day, exploring a blend of history, culture, and modern innovation. This year’s showcase focused on Gansu, a northwestern province famed for its Silk Road heritage and dramatic transformation.
In his keynote speech, titled “A Certain China in an Uncertain World,” Ambassador Xie Feng underscored the power of openness. “History shows that openness brings progress, while isolation leads to stagnation,” he said, urging global cooperation amid economic fragmentation.
Once among the Chinese mainland’s poorest regions, Gansu has lifted more than 5.5 million people out of poverty while expanding digital infrastructure across its vast landscapes. Visitors experienced “Digital Dunhuang,” a virtual tour of ancient Buddhist grottoes, alongside interactive displays of traditional medicine, calligraphy, and homegrown tech solutions.
Xie also addressed current trade tensions, warning that tariff hikes “disrupt businesses, raise costs, rattle financial markets, and slow down global growth.” He stressed that no one benefits from economic barriers and reaffirmed the Chinese mainland’s commitment to mutual respect and high-quality development.
The event drew officials from Maryland, the World Bank, and other diplomatic missions, reflecting a shared interest in cultural exchange and sustainable growth. As the gates closed, the ambassador reiterated that “the Chinese mainland’s door to the world will only open wider,” signaling continued engagement on the global stage.
