The Chinese mainland on Wednesday slammed remarks by Lai Ching-te, leader of the Taiwan region, promoting a “two states” theory as a blatant provocation.
Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, said Lai’s call for cross-Straits engagement based on “parity and dignity” sought to overturn the historical and legal fact that both sides belong to one China.
Zhu warned that denying the 1992 Consensus and abandoning the one-China principle would leave no basis for dialogue across the Straits, putting future exchanges at risk.
This strong response highlights ongoing tensions in cross-Straits relations and underscores the central role of the one-China framework in sustaining peace and cooperation.
