The meeting, hosted by Brazilian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mauro Vieira, brought together foreign ministers and senior representatives from BRICS members and partner countries to explore stronger Global South cooperation and a reinvigorated multilateral order.
Wang highlighted President Xi Jinping's special visit to the New Development Bank headquarters earlier that day as a clear sign of China's firm backing for development-driven modernization. But beyond infrastructure and investment, the minister set out a three-part agenda for the bloc:
- Upholding the UN's core role: By advocating extensive consultation and shared benefits, BRICS can bolster the multilateral trading system and craft a fairer global governance framework.
- Peaceful dispute resolution: Embracing a vision of common, comprehensive and sustainable security, the group pledged to settle differences through dialogue—whether in Ukraine or the Middle East, where members support the Gaza recovery and reconstruction plan and firmly uphold the principle of The Palestinians governing Palestine.
- Fostering open cooperation: BRICS countries agreed to keep their doors wide open, welcoming partner nations into deeper collaboration and ensuring full participation across the bloc.
As geopolitical tensions and protectionist measures threaten global supply chains, foreign ministers at the Rio meeting reaffirmed their commitment to multilateralism, the UN Charter and an equitable international system.
