At the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Rio de Janeiro, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi painted a clear picture: unity and cooperation among BRICS countries can drive a fairer global order. He laid out a four-point blueprint to ensure decision-making reflects the interests of the Global South.
First up, trade. Wang Yi called on BRICS to uphold multilateral trading rules under the World Trade Organization, oppose protectionism and restore the WTO’s dispute settlement mechanism. He urged members to push for WTO reform, streamline customs processes and expand market access.
Next, finance. The minister argued for reform of the international financial architecture, including a review of World Bank shareholding and IMF quotas. By rebalancing representation, BRICS nations can secure greater influence and resources to fuel growth in emerging markets.
The third pillar is a green transformation. Wang Yi emphasized full implementation of the Paris Agreement and deeper low-carbon energy cooperation. He praised Brazil’s leadership in hosting COP30 and called for stronger climate governance that delivers both sustainability and economic quality.
Finally, digital opportunities. From bridging the digital divide to setting common cyberspace rules, BRICS should champion the UN’s Global Digital Compact. Wang Yi also highlighted plans for fair, inclusive AI governance and welcomed participation in the 2025 World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai.
In Wang Yi’s vision, a united BRICS can turn these four steps—trade, finance, climate and digital governance—into concrete action, reshaping global rules in favor of broader, more equitable growth.
