Putin Declares 72-Hour Ceasefire for WWII Victory Anniversary

In a surprise announcement, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared a 72-hour ceasefire in Ukraine to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Victory in World War II. The Kremlin said all military operations would pause from midnight on May 7โ€“8 until midnight on May 10โ€“11 for humanitarian reasons.

Russia urged Ukraine to honor the temporary truce, warning that any breaches by Ukrainian forces would be met with an adequate and effective response.

The Kremlin also emphasized Russia's readiness for peace talks without preconditions, aiming to address the root causes of the Ukrainian crisis and foster constructive engagement with international partners.

As the world marks eight decades since the end of WWII, this pause in fighting highlights the enduring hope for dialogue and relief amid one of Europeโ€™s most challenging conflicts.
