China Monitors US Destroyer Passage Through the Taiwan Strait

US Destroyer USS William P. Lawrence Monitored in Taiwan Strait

On Wednesday, the Eastern Theater Command of the Chinese People's Liberation Army tracked and monitored the U.S. destroyer USS William P. Lawrence throughout its passage through the Taiwan Strait, a spokesperson said on Thursday.

Senior Colonel Shi Yi, spokesperson for the theater command, explained that naval and air forces from the Chinese mainland shadowed the vessel and handled the transit in accordance with laws and regulations.

Shi Yi noted that U.S. remarks "distort legal principles and mislead international public opinion." He urged Washington to stop sensationalizing the issue and partner in safeguarding regional peace and stability.

As tensions simmer in the Taiwan Strait, this incident underscores the delicate balance between freedom of navigation and regional security. What steps can both sides take to keep these strategic waters calm?
