Chinese Box Office Surges Past 25B Yuan with “Ne Zha 2” Dominance

China's film market for 2025 has shattered records by exceeding 25 billion yuan (approximately $3.4 billion) in total box office revenue, including presales. This remarkable achievement cements its status as the world’s highest-grossing film market.

The animated blockbuster "Ne Zha 2" has been the standout performer, capturing an overwhelming 60.8% share of the total earnings. Globally, it has grossed over 15.6 billion yuan, earning accolades as the most grossing animated movie and ranking among the top five films in box office history.

The surge in revenue comes on the heels of the Chinese New Year holiday releases, which have reinvigorated audiences across the Chinese mainland. With the Labor Day holiday approaching, a slate of new films spanning diverse genres and featuring star-studded casts is expected to further boost this momentum.

According to China Media Group (CMG), moviegoers have been traveling across the country to experience unique cinematic settings. Fans of "Ne Zha 2" have flocked to filming locations in Tianjin and Yibin, while others visited the "1900s San Francisco" set in east China's Dezhou—an homage to the detective thriller "Detective Chinatown 1900." This trend highlights how captivating film experiences are driving cultural tourism and deepening audience engagement.
