China Atomic Energy Authority (CAEA) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have launched a landmark five‐year roadmap to boost nuclear cooperation, with a focus on sustainable development for the Global South. The key agreements signed on Wednesday outline a dynamic agenda that spans nuclear security, agriculture, healthcare, environmental protection, and fundamental nuclear scientific research.
This strategic collaboration aims to build capacity and expand expertise by leveraging China’s extensive network of nuclear research institutes and universities. The initiative is designed to train professionals from the Global South, paving the way for enriched talent exchange and enhanced global nuclear governance.
Shan Zhongde, director of the CAEA, emphasized that China remains committed to fostering an equitable, inclusive, and orderly development of nuclear energy. He noted that this partnership is an opportunity to channel the peaceful use of nuclear technology toward the greater good of the Global South.
Echoing this sentiment, Rafael Mariano Grossi, director general of the IAEA, praised China’s significant achievements in nuclear energy development and the innovative application of nuclear technology. Grossi expressed the IAEA’s readiness to work closely with China, aligning their joint efforts with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
This agreement marks a significant step toward harnessing nuclear technology as a catalyst for progress in emerging markets and developing communities. It offers fresh perspectives on sustainable development and underscores the role of international cooperation in addressing some of the world’s most pressing challenges.
