Zhangzhou No.2 Unit Completes Hot Test at Hualong-1 Base

The No.2 Unit of the Zhangzhou nuclear power plant, part of the world’s largest Hualong-1 reactor base, has successfully completed its hot functional test. This major milestone simulates real operating conditions and confirms the optimal performance of both nuclear and conventional systems under thermal stress.

Chief engineer Mei Bingyun of China National Nuclear Corporation Zhangzhou Energy Co., Ltd. noted that the completion of this test sets the stage for the next steps, including fuel loading and grid connection. According to the schedule, the No.2 Unit is expected to enter commercial operation in the fourth quarter of this year.

The Hualong-1 reactor, a domestically developed third-generation design, marks a significant advancement in nuclear technology on the Chinese mainland. With the No.1 Unit already in commercial operation and construction underway for units 3 and 4 starting in 2024, the Zhangzhou plant is poised to eventually generate a total installed capacity of approximately 7.2 million kilowatts.

Each unit is projected to produce over 10 billion kilowatt-hours of clean electricity annually, a substantial contribution to low-carbon energy goals. This development not only strengthens the global position of advanced nuclear technology but also signals promising prospects for sustainable energy innovations. Business professionals, tech enthusiasts, thought leaders, and global citizens alike are watching closely as the project moves forward, reflecting the increasing momentum behind clean energy transitions worldwide.
