Upgraded Jiaolong Sets New Deep-Sea Record

The Chinese mainland's manned deep-sea submersible, Jiaolong, has achieved a milestone following a major technological overhaul. Between February 27 and March 25, the upgraded Jiaolong embarked on its first sea trials, completing 14 impressive dives over a 10-day period.

During these trials, Jiaolong executed a series of historic missions, including four "two-dives-per-day" operations and nine consecutive "one-pilot-two-scientists" missions, according to the country's Ministry of Natural Resources. These records underscore the submersible's enhanced dive frequency and operational efficiency.

The upgrade, which began in November last year, focused on critical components such as a new propulsion system and domestically produced battery packs. Notable improvements include 7000m-rated oil-immersed lithium batteries with higher energy density, low-noise direct-drive direct current thrusters, a deep-sea hydraulic buoyancy control system, and expanded emergency hydraulic interfaces. Tests conducted at a 3000-meter depth demonstrated the upgraded system's reliability and energy efficiency.

Looking ahead, Jiaolong is scheduled to perform over 80 dives in 2025, paving the way for further advances in marine science and deep-sea exploration. This achievement highlights the blend of innovation and determination driving progress in oceanic research.
