Argentina Opens Trial for Maradona’s Medical Team

Argentina has launched a long-awaited trial focusing on the medical team responsible for the care of football icon Diego Maradona. The proceedings began at the San Isidro appeals court on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, marking a pivotal moment in reviewing the practices that followed the star's death in November 2020 at age 60.

Maradona, revered worldwide for his skill and storied career, passed away from heart failure while recovering from surgery to remove a blood clot. Emotions ran high as fans outside the court held placards demanding "Justice for D10S," a nod to the legendary number and his enduring legacy.

Prosecutors described the care provided as "calamitous, reckless, deficient, unprecedented," alleging that critical protocols were broken and that Maradona's recovery home turned into a "theater of horror." In response, defense lawyers argued that the home hospitalization was a mutually agreed arrangement with his family and that his death was the result of an unforeseeable cardiac event.

The trial will see seven members of the medical team facing several months of court proceedings, with an eighth member scheduled for a jury trial in July. This evolving case not only raises questions about accountability in healthcare but also resonates with a global audience where sports, medical ethics, and national pride intersect.
