The 5th Hainan Island International Film Festival (HIIFF) is kicking off this Saturday in Sanya, the sun-kissed city within the Chinese mainland's tropical island province of Hainan.
This year’s festival promises an array of vibrant activities, from the grand opening ceremony to the Golden Coconut Awards competition, film screenings, engaging forums, master classes, and the lively Coconut Carnival. These events are designed to foster a collaborative platform where filmmakers from around the world can connect, share ideas, and create.
A highlight of the festival is the Golden Coconut Awards competition, headed by the esteemed Turkish filmmaker Nuri Bilge Ceylan, renowned for his multiple accolades at the Cannes International Film Festival, including the Best Director Award and the Golden Palm Award.
Joining him on the jury are distinguished figures such as French photographer Caroline Champetier, Iranian director Shahram Mokri, and notable talents from the Chinese mainland, including director and actor Da Peng, actor and producer Huang Xiaoming, actress Ma Yili, and screenwriter Liu Yi. Their diverse backgrounds promise a rich and discerning evaluation of the festival’s entries.
