China's Minister of Education, Huai Jinpeng, emphasized the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in the educational sector during an interview on Wednesday. Speaking at the annual session of the national legislature in Beijing, Huai addressed questions about innovations like DeepSeek and humanoid robots.
Huai stated that every major technological revolution and industrial transformation not only places significant demands on society but also presents substantial opportunities for reform and development, particularly in education. In response to these changes, China is set to implement comprehensive reforms in higher education.
The minister outlined plans to enhance core courses, bolster key faculty positions, and develop essential textbooks in mathematics and computer science—fundamental disciplines aligned with national strategies. Moreover, China aims to cultivate more talent in emerging and interdisciplinary fields, fostering deeper integration between industry, science, and education.
With approximately 4 million postgraduate students and 39 million undergraduates, China's educational landscape is vast. To further support basic education, Huai revealed that China will release a white paper on AI education in 2025. This initiative is part of broader efforts to equip students with enhanced literacy and skills tailored for the digital and AI era.
